All the major tenant groups are working together for these goals:
Come to the Rally to Strengthen the Rent Laws
Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014 at 10 AM (get there early)
at City Hall. Click here for a flyer in Word - so you can add your group's name.
Our goals for the January legislative session are unanimously endorsed by Tenants & Neighbors, Met Council on Housing, the Real Rent Reform Campaign, the Alliance for Tenant Power, Goddard-Riverside Community Center and SRO Law Project, Housing Conservation Coordinators, the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development, CASA, other city- and state-wide tenant organizations, Legal Aid, many individual tenant groups, and staff for some elected officials.
The Real Rent Reform Legislative Committee meetings will hash out specific strategy and are open to all tenant activists and their union and other supporters: the first Monday of every month, 3-5 PM at Coalition for the Homeless, 129 Fulton St., 4th Floor Conference Room. (Check the NY Tenant Calendar on this website - and add it to your Google calendar.)
We're in a better position than the last time around in 2011: This time we have a mayor on our side.
- Repeal vacancy deregulation (also known as vacancy decontrol) and re-regulate
- Close the loopholes that make affordable apartments unaffordable (Major Capital Improvements, Individual Apartment Improvements, preferential rents, illegal fees, and more).
- Keep illegal hotels - including AirBnB - from depleting our stock of affordable housing.
